United Buddy Bears World Tour 2011/2012

if you have been to Pavilion over the weekend, you might have noticed there’s tons of bears surrounding the mall.
here’s a brief idea what are the bears is doing there.

The bears are called United Buddy Bears, they are a series of painted, life size bear sculptures from Berlin, Germany.
The first bear was created by Kluas and Eva Herlitz from Germany.

The United Buddy Bears World Tour started in June – November 2002 in Berlin, Germany.
So far the bears have travelled 5 continents and Malaysia is the 23rd stop and 17th country on the global tour.

The message that the United Buddy Bears wanted to send

“Buddy Bears stands together "hand in hand", symbolizing the future vision of a peaceful world.
Each bear stands for the people of the different countries and their culture, yet not for political systems.”

As you can see, 143 nations has joined and painted their own Buddy Bear
each representing their countries’ art and culture.
Other than the 143 Buddy Bears representing each nation,
there is also four Special Bears available in the exhibition.

I am personally a big fan of Vimeo.com actually, well maybe YouTube is a bit more commercialized and mainstream where everyone goes there to check out Music Videos or commercial. I find Vimeo is a platform for videographers to showcase their videos and artworks, plus the interface is more towards my preference. I’ve seen a couple of photography related videos in Vimeo.com, and found that their approach is different than the ones in YouTube. So yea, i like Vimeo, that’s all.

Anyway here’s a video with me inside, shot by Justin Hee using my 60D with various lens like Sigma 30mm F/1.4, Canon 100mm Macro F/2.8. It’s something random and about photography.

infamous railway

Had this shoot at the infamous Subang railway track few weeks ago with a few aspirin photographers/bloggers and 3 models. The theme was set to a Pop Music-ish kinda look. Everything turn out to be great and fun on that day. I’ve been to the tracks for a couple of time but i couldn’t really explore everything that is available there, except for the abandoned house and the tracks, next time i would want to go into the deeper area and see what’s prepared for us. Perhaps i should arrange another session at the infamous Subang Railway track, mainly not to shoot but to look around and seek for another possibility for photoshooting. Yes, i just like to be different than the others ;)

Anyway here’s the models that i shot the other day, it was indeed a good experience for all of them. There’s more to come and hopefully can create more shoots for them in the future.

it was around noon and the light were shining through the broken windows, i quickly set up my models at the side of the windows to get their face and body lighted up only at one side. Took a few shot for each model and this three turned out to be the best among their shots.

Well i’m still busy editing a lot of pictures and doing a few shooting here and there. Assignment comes along the way and i manage to juggle between my passion for photography & college.
I always thanks for those who supported me in photography, the encouragement and kind words have made me improve a lot, as a photographer and a person myself.

Another day well spent at IMVA studio, Stephanie and Winnie was really kind to volunteer themselves to be our model while some of us are still giving the studio a test run. Here are two shots of the girls i took today, i’m pretty much satisfied with the both of these pictures but there’s more to come, i shall just post two first as a teaser. Figured out that every angle of the light and the power output of the light affects a lot to a picture, and you really need the chemistry between a model and a photographer to make the shooting session go smooth and easy. Overall it’s another fun day at IMVA, another day of learning ;)

It was a really chilling session at IMVA studio the other day, me and Azrin was figuring out how to work the two flash in the studio while Jason and Feeq volunteered to me our “model”. Pictures taken that day turns out to be quite satisfying for me, of course there’s still a lot more about studio lighting for me to learn. Gonna post some jump shot first (mostly inspired by someone) :P

The Multipurpose Hall was turn into a educational fair!

Parents and potential students get to know more about Taylor’s University
Counselors and lecturers were at their respective booth explaining their courses provided in the University.

Other than the educational fair held in the hall,
there were a lot of activities provided for the people who visited Taylor’s University that day.
One of it was the Hot Air Balloon Ride
where they get a ride and a view of how the whole campus looks like.

There was a science of food workshop held outside the hall
where students showcase their talent of
how foods are made using science theory.

Taylor’s Lakeside Campus has also showcased their student designed car
the car was built by Formula Varsity Race Champion Team
from School of Engineering.

of course we were also given a campus tour.
visiting Ruemz was certainly an awesome experience.

Ruemz is a hotel run by the students from the school of Hospitality.
from housekeeping to reception desk,
it is all handled by their students,
to give them hands on experience.

Ruemz will be opening soon next year,
anyone is welcome to stay at Ruemz
and enjoy the wonderful environment around there.

Creativity in Motion
Limkokwing University’s glittering international fashion show
is held at Cafe Stelle at Pavilion Shopping Mall
at the 15th December 2010.

The fashion show is set to feature over 60 designs,
a collection that combines the work of graduating students of Limkokwing University
as well as students who are still pursuing their studies
in the School of Fashion and Retail Design

I was honored to be invited as one of the media
to witness the artwork by the talented studetns of Limkokwing

the mall was filled with celebrities, media and crowds
and they turn the table into a runway,
now that’s a very daring and creative idea.

“Creativity In Motion”
is a collection of fashion ideas from the world’s next generation;
this time around the designs took on a variety of influence as wide ranging
as China opera inspired collection, to Japanese Origami, Brazilian tribal culture and even cervical cancer.

after looking at all the designs/clothes presented by Limkokwing’s students
I think that the student there are really talented and creative,
the dress and clothes are well tailored according to their desired themes,
some might out of the extraordinary, but some are really unique in it’s way

well i guess fashion is a very subjective matter,
everyone have their own say about beauty and ugly.
Kudos to Limkokwing University for such successful fashion show
definitely hope to see more artwork from them
;)

Two Miss Universe Malaysia Pageant in 2011

in 2011,
there will be two Miss Universe Malaysia Pageant proudly representing Malaysia to compete against the Miss Universe Pageant from all around the world.

Andrea Fonseka, National Director of the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO)
shared her vision to breathe new life into the Miss Universe Malaysia pageant.

“We are going to crown our Miss Universe Malaysia winners one year in advance.”

This equates to more time for grooming and training,
cultivating the most essential skills of a Miss Universe contender.
Latin American nations are famous for producing Miss Universe winners typically
between 8 to 12 months to train and prepare before competing.
Malaysia has had to compress this complex process
into a period of 3 to 4 months in previous years.

MUMO intends to overcome this disadvantage by crowning both 2011 and 2012 Miss Universe Malays in 2011,
the first time there have been two Miss Universe Malaysia pageants and winners in the same year

For this transition,
Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 would be identified and selected by September 2011.
This in turn means that the Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 candidate
will be crowned by February 2011 to compete at the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant.

the state-of-the-art indoor climbing gym
that’s situated at the 5th floor of One Utama

well the purpose of visiting Camp5 this time
other than climbing the walls
is to introduce to you their latest climbing wall

A Charity Fundraising Event

Bangsar Shopping Centre

2 April 2010

Kuala Lumpur – My Art Fix, a charity fundraising event spear-headed by youths for youths, is calling out to the good Samaritans of Malaysia for support to aid under privileged children as well as promote local youth development. The event will be held at Concourse of Bangsar Shopping Centre on 2nd April 2010 at 8 pm.

Organised by OrkidStudio (www.orkidstudio.co.uk), a registered non-profit organisation focusing in using art, architecture and design as a means of humanitarian aid aimed at helping orphaned and ‘street’ children in under privileged areas of the world, My Art Fix is made possible by the kindness and support of young artists as well as various local corporate entities.

This year, in conjunction with SuDeChaBei, a local arts initiative, My Art Fix is aimed at helping a few local community homes as well as The Alalay Project;

50% of the nett proceeds will be donated to three (3) local Malaysian charities, namely, Shelter, Pusat Bantuan Sentul and Calvary Victory Centre (an autistic outreach) and,

The other 50% will be used for the construction costs and realisation of Orkidstudio’s latest charity build commencing in July 2010 - The Alalay Project. The project aims to build a carpentry workshop in Bolivia, South America, where it will equip Bolivian children with important knowledge and essential skills that they can use to pull themselves out of poverty.

The Event

My Art Fix will be featuring up and coming fashion designers, artists, photographers, and singers in their effort to promote local youth development.

The event will showcase two young Malaysian fashion designers, Ka-Men Fong and Irene See under the label ‘Chic Yamada’, as well as multi-disciplinary designer, Su Mei who will be presenting her latest accessories collection.

There will also be an art exhibition showcasing local budding artists including Raja Aiman (photography), Zoheyr (painting), Haffendi Anwar (sculpture), Su Mei (painting and photography), Fara Omar (film and poetry) and introducing an aspiring singer/songwrite Aaron Lee.

All artworks on display will be for sale and 40% of the sales will be contributed to the charity fund.

My Art Fix is supported by A Cut Above, Shoes Shoes Shoes, Bangsar Shopping Centre as well as various prospective donors including celebrity model/actress Daphne Iking who will be emceeing the event.

Background Information

Organisers:

Orkid Studio: www.orkidstudio.co.uk

Established 2 years ago by three architecture students in Cardiff University which aims at helping orphanages all around the world. Amongst them are Tan Su Mei of Malaysia, James Mitchell of Scotland and Julissa Kiyenje of Uganda. This organization is a non-profit design organization whose focus is to benefit young people and communities worldwide through innovative and sustainable architecture, art and design.

These young architects conduct all construction and labour by themselves together with the help of the children and the local people. This approach not only saves on costs but also serves the purpose of educating the children as to how they can build living structures that are sustainable for the future.

The Mukono Project, 2008:

The first project of Orkid Studio, where a total sum of 14,000 Pounds was raised globally (Scotland, Uganda, England, Malaysia) to benefit the New Hope Orphanage in the Mukono District, Uganda. The money was used to purchase raw materials to build a new kitchen, a communal space and integrate a rainwater harvesting system. Previously the nearest source of water for this village was one mile away and a small shack served as a kitchen to cater for 350 children. Since the completion of these structures, the rain harvesting system has not only benefited the orphanage but also the local community surrounding it by providing them with clean running water all year round. The kitchen and communal space has now become a local landmark and is the pride of the community, becoming a focal point for social activity on Sundays after church services.

The founders did not take any administrative fees for this project and all living and travel expenses were taken from their personal savings.

The Alalay Project, 2010:

This year, the foundation will be headed to Bolivia where they will be working together with the Alalay Foundation (www.alalay.info). The Alalay Foundation aims at helping street children find their place in society through their two programs- the Protection Program and the Prevention Program. The protection program serves as a place for children to find shelter from their dire situations and the prevention part serves as a platform to educate children. They have a number of centres set up all over Bolivia and Orkid Studio will collaborate with them to build a carpentry workshop and classrooms in two different centres respectively. This will be an addition to their already established orphanages. Both living and travelling expenses will once again come out from the personal savings of the founders and not the funds raised from the event.

Su De Cha Bei:

Literally translated as ‘su’s cup of tea’ in mandarin is an arts initiative that serves as a platform for young and emerging talent in Malaysia to showcase their skills as well as the opportunity to collaborate with each other. This art initiative, founded this year by Tan Su Mei, will incorporate all the different art scenes including fashion, fine art, photography, film and music. The main objective of this collaborative group is to create a strong global network where artists of different backgrounds and culture can come together to inspire and support one another.

Ka-Men Fong

Her Resort collection exudes flexibility and can be worn both day and night. She focuses on using traditional fabrics such as songket, saris and tudungs which are transformed into stylish blazers, cocktail dresses and chic kaftans. She attributes her inspirations from her love of Malaysian heritage and from her travels around South East Asia.

Chic Yamada

Needing no introduction to the Malaysian fashion scene, last season, the Chic Yamada "Artistry Collection" produced a full graphic design range of eco-friendly tops inspired by women who are on the go. This year they are back with Chic Yamada High Street Garden SS10.

Su Mei

Known for her bold choice of accessories, this season’s accessories collection comprises of statement floral pieces that are larger than life! Her pieces are all one offs and individually hand made, guaranteeing to turn any outfit in to the talking point of the night.

Sex education has been the latest topic these days. It’s never too late to educate the youth about safe sex. As we all know, sex among youth is inevitable. So we’re not going to preach you not to have sex, but to have SAFE sex.

Organized by the Advanced Marketing Communications of HELP University College, this event aims to create awareness on the importance of safe sex and the negative consequences of unprotected sex.

We'll have:
- An exhibition featuring photos and facts
- Talks on STDs and safe sex by Dr Allan Teh and Dr Mary Huang (U.N representative)
- Booths, offering cervical cancer vaccination at a discounted price!

a place we call

“the happy place”

the haute food co. is a small cafe, smaller than you can imagine, it has only three tables but the place is just nice and cozy. it doesn’t only serve nice cookies and biscuits , but also nice warm coffees and drinks that are specially invented by them.

on that day we went, all of us had sandwiches since Christine strongly recommended us to try their sandwich. and here goes.

i hope the pictures has explain everything i should explain, because i couldn’t even find words to describe how nice these sandwiches are!! they must have sprinkled some magic ingredients in it i guess. hmmmmmmm…… :D

oh that’s not just it

some-raspberry-drink-that-only-christine-knows-name-drink, i’m not a berry-lover but this drink is awesome, the berry blends nicely with the lemon and the soda and gives you a really good sour-ish taste. (amazingly i still can remember the taste after almost a month)

tiramisu cake and raspberry cheesecake. these cakes are freshly made by them with their own recipe, it tasted really different than any other cake you can buy at retail stores. should not miss it if you’re there, it tastes up to the expectation. :D

a taste of Sid’s pubs

some of you might have know this place already, or maybe even a regular customer who drops by and have a glass or Guinness or two. it was my first time going to Sid’s Pub last Friday, with a bunch of good companions of course. The first Sid’s Pub was in TTDI, open for business in September 2007. They also have two more branches situated at Bangsar South and Bukit Tunku. It might look like another ordinary pub where you hang out with your friends and watch football, but Sid’s Pub gives me a totally different feel from the others. The bartenders are very friendly, they recommend what meals for you, suggesting different varieties of drinks for you as well. Even the owner of Sid’s Pub was there as well to serve the customers.

it started with a glass of Heineken, which i think it tasted different from the bottles or cans, maybe because it’s fresh from the barrel?

this was suggested by the owner of Sid’s Pub, they used King Cod Fish for this Fish & Chip, the fishes are freshly imported from New Zealand and it’s QC are well taken care.

see the fish meat is think enough and well cooked, add on a bit of lemon and it’s one perfect Fish & Chip you’re having.

to go with the Fish, this is definitely one sauce you must try, Heinz Malt Vinegar, it tastes different than the normal kind of vinegar, a bit more sour, but not too sour. it’s just nice. :)

one of the drinks served in the Pub, Snake Bit, well strong bow is another kind of beer, it tastes really smooth because it’s really sweet at the same time as well, suitable for those who love the sweet candy flavor.

and the world is getting smaller and smaller now, well it’s a small world after all. it was a table of five and we know each another in different ways.

thanks to ~~bad influence~~ them i got myself a perfect pint of Guinness too! well first time ma… :P

i would prefer to have a glass of Guinness now than beers because Guinness is much more smoother than beers.

actually there’s more food for my tummy to digest, but sadly i was late for the food review so i had to miss out a few dishes of delicious food!! oh well i still want to thank Rebecca and Feeq for organizing this food review session at Traffic D’light Cafe, it was indeed fun and eye opening for me (my first food tasting session. :D)

The cafe itself is situated above the street with big and cozy space, a very good place to hang out with the friends and family. Personally i think the food there are nice and unique because they serve all range of cuisine and the food are nicely prepared. :)
